DATA BEFORE DEBATETRACKING WHAT CHANGESSOURCES ON EVERY DASHBOARD
METHODOLOGY

Same question.
Same ruler.

Michigan Progress separates comparable data, derived indicators, local administrative records and live reporting. That distinction is the product.

01 / POPULATION

Census Vintage 2025

The Michigan 276 is ranked using July 1, 2025 incorporated-place population estimates. Five-year direction compares the Vintage 2025 2020 estimate base with the 2025 estimate.

02 / HOUSEHOLDS

2020–2024 ACS

Median household income, median owner-occupied home value, homeownership and poverty are kept in one ACS/QuickFacts vintage so city comparisons are not mixing reporting periods.

03 / BUILDING

2025 Building Permits Survey

Michigan Progress reports housing units authorized and residential buildings from the annual place file when a clean city row is available. Authorized units are not completions or occupancy.

04 / DERIVED

Transparent calculations

Housing activity is units authorized per 1,000 residents. Value-to-income divides median owner-occupied value by median household income. Rankings are calculated only within the Michigan 276.

05 / LOCAL DATA

Geography before precision

School districts, police agencies and city boundaries often do not match. A local hard number is only displayed when the geography and period are defensible. Otherwise the page provides current source-linked reporting rather than a false statistic.

06 / NEWS

Discovery, not measurement

The live city wire uses Google News RSS searches across publishers with a 30-day query window and short cache. Headlines link to publishers and are kept separate from the audited data layer.

WHAT “CURRENT” MEANS

Newest reliable vintage, not one universal date.

Population estimates, ACS five-year estimates, building permits, school records, crime reports and development milestones are published on different schedules. Every dashboard identifies the vintage instead of disguising that mismatch.

FAQ / AEO

Michigan Progress methodology FAQ

Direct answers based on the evidence and methodology used on this page.

Why do Michigan Progress metrics use different years?

Population estimates, ACS household measures, building permits, schools and crime data are released on different schedules. The site labels each vintage rather than disguising those differences.

Why are some city fields marked unavailable?

Michigan Progress displays N/A when a clean comparable city-level record cannot be verified rather than inventing a zero or substituting a county or agency number.

Are Michigan Progress rankings a scientific index?

No. Individual rankings and transparent derived ratios are provided as context; the site does not collapse unlike indicators into an opaque single score.
